Ghana is an ideal destination for a wildlife safari holiday. With its 16 National Parks, resource reserves and protected areas covering a vast and varied habitat from wetland lagoons and saltpans along the Gold Coast, to tropical guinea rainforest in southern Ghana. More centrally, you will find broad leaved woodland and as you venture northwards, the sahelian savannah plains.
The National Parks in Ghana are home to a dazzling array of wildlife, highlights include forest and savannah elephants, hippopotami, lions, leopards, hyenas, chimpanzee, baboons, 7 species of monkey, 3 species of crocodile, buffalo, various antelopes and much more. Mole National Park alone has over 93 mammal species. Ghana also has over 750 different species of birds.
We also incorporate cultural excursions during all of our wildlife tours. We pass through remote areas seldom visited by tourists. This enhances our guest’s experience of the real Ghana and gives you a real sense of isolation from the developed world. Idyllic settings coupled with the colourful and warm hospitality of the varied ethnic groups who live in and around the National Parks, provide you with all the reasons you need to take an excursion into one of the finest wildlife zones in the world. Outline Itinerary
12 days/11 nights
Day 1: Arrival:
Arrival at Kotoka international airport and transferred to your hotel by the experienced guides who will be with you for the duration of your tour. You will be briefed on all aspects of your holiday over complementary drinks as you acclimatise yourself to Western Africa.
Day 2: Wildlife viewing:
Your first day with us in Ghana and the beginning of an amazing journey, after breakfast we set off heading west along the beautiful gold coast, our destination is Cape Coast. On our arrival we visit Kakum National Park and Africa’s only canopy walkway. Kakum is a beautiful tropical guinea rainforest and the canopy is an exciting excursion, set 40 metres above the rainforest floor and attached to 7 emerging trees, this is an excursion never forgotten.
Day 3: Wildlife viewing:
After a leisurely breakfast we set off heading north, our destination is Kumasi, stopping at the beautiful Owabi wildlife sanctuary en route. Owabi protects a small number of black and white colobus and mona monkeys, extremely rare in this part of the country.
Day 4: Wildlife viewing and cultural excursions:
After a leisurely breakfast we set off Northwards towards the villages of Boebeng and Fiema, these 2 villages have been protecting black and white colobus and mona monkeys that live in the surrounding forests. The locals perceive them to be sacred; we will tour the village interacting with the locals, learning their history and traditions.
Day 5: Wildlife viewing and cultural excursions:
An early start as we set off for the Upper West region of Ghana and the Wechiau community hippo sanctuary. Wechiau was voted the 3rd best eco conservation project in the world by the Independent newspaper in the UK. We enjoy a wonderful day mixing with the local community and seeing the endangered hippos on an unforgettable river safari, definitely a highlight of our trip.
Day 6: Wildlife viewing and cultural excursions:
We enjoy another early morning river safari seeing these magnificent mammals in their natural environment. The afternoon will be spent with the locals from the community around our Lobi compound. In the evening we will relax under the beautiful African night sky listening to traditional Lobi xylophone music.
Day 7: Wildlife viewing:
After a morning river safari we head off for Mole National Park, Ghana’s largest and best game viewing park. We set off for an afternoon foot safari getting extremely close to the worlds largest land mammals African Elephants. We marvel at the wildlife as we relax around the pool of our hotel in the evening.
Day 8: Wildlife viewing:
The morning starts with a buzz as we load up our 4x4 and set off driving deep into this 4840km² National Park. We will set up camp in the early afternoon and then trek into the park searching for some of the 93 mammals recorded here. In the evening we will sit around the camp with an amazing feeling of being so close to nature.
Day 9: Wildlife viewing:
After morning trekking deep in the park, we will return to Mole hotel to relax and watch the wildlife around the watering holes.
Day 10: Cultural excursions:
After an early morning foot safari we depart Mole, our destination is Kumasi, en route we will stop at Larabanga and the 14th century mud and stick mosque. We continue our journey taking a refreshing break at the beautiful Kintampo waterfall. Some of our guests use this opportunity to experience the most refreshing shower in Ghana. On our arrival in Kumasi we relax around the pool of our hotel.
Day 11: Accra tour:
We leave for Accra after breakfast, en route we will visit the beautiful Boti waterfall for a refreshing break. After the falls we visit a small village that makes traditional Ghanaian glass beads. We will sit with Comfort and here wonderful family learning the history behind the beads and the skilled process of making them. We continue our journey to Accra stopping at Aburi craft village, an excellent place to buy wooden carvings and see the skilled locals carving outside their workshops. A short distance from the village is Aburi Botanical Gardens a beautiful place to stop for lunch. We arrive in Accra early evening and relax at our hotel.
Day 12: Wildlife viewing:
Your final day with us in Ghana, after a leisurely breakfast you can relax around the pool of your hotel or visit the Shai Hills Reserve olive baboons and antelopes are widespread. We enjoy an early evening meal before your departure after a wonderful 12 day tour.
