Outline Itinerary

 

17 Days/16 Nights

 

Day 1: Arrival:

Arrival at Kotoka international airport and transferred to your hotel by the experienced guides who will be with you for the duration of your tour.  You will be briefed on all aspects of your holiday over complementary drinks as you acclimatise yourself to Western Africa.

 

Day 2: Community based ecotourism project and wildlife:

The beginning of an amazing journey, we set off for the village of Tafi Atome in the Volta region, here the local ethnic group are the Ewe’s.  They protect the local population of Mona monkeys found in the surrounding forests as they are believed to be sacred by the locals.  En route we will visit the beautiful Wli falls, West Africa's highest waterfall for a relaxing and refreshing break.  The evening will be spent living with the locals, witnessing traditional Ewe drumming and dance and listening to old fables from village elders under the beautiful African night sky.

 

Day 3: Cultural excursions:

After breakfast we set off for Tafi Abuife Kente weaving village, a rarely visited village where they still weave kente using century’s old methods.  We will interact with the locals learning the history and meanings of the many beautiful designs.  We return to Tafi Atome in the afternoon for African drumming and dance lessons.  In the evening we will relax in one of the village spots (bars) mixing with the locals.

 

Day 4: Cultural excursions:

After a hearty breakfast we bid a sad farewell to Tafi Atome and set off for Cape Coast, arriving in the late afternoon.  We transfer to our hotel to relax for the evening.

 

Day 5: Cultural excursions:

The morning starts with a buzz as we set off for Kakum National Park and Africa’s only canopy walkway.  Kakum is a beautiful tropical guinea rainforest and the canopy is an exciting excursion, set 40 metres above the rainforest floor and attached to 7 emerging trees, this is an excursion never forgotten.  After lunch we visit Cape Coast castle a UNESCO world heritage site for an emotional journey through Ghana’s recent tragic enslaved African trade era.
After this tour we travel to the village of Mosomangar and the exceptional bamboo orchestra.  During our time in the village we will interact with the locals learning the history behind the orchestra and experience their daily life.  After witnessing an amazing performance and interacting with locals at a nearby spot (bar) we settle down in the local guesthouse for the evening.

 

Day 6: Cultural excursions:

We start our journey to Kumasi, home of the Asantehene, King of the Ashanti’s.  En route we will stop at Assin Manso, an important town along the enslaved African trade routes.  Here enslaved Africans were bathed in a nearby river and checked for fitness before transportation to Cape Coast castle and shipment to the Americas.  On arrival in Kumasi we will visit the National Cultural centre which is where we find the Prempeh II Jubilee museum.  The museum offers an excellent overview of Ashanti history that will benefit us during our time in the region.

 

Day 7: Cultural excursions:

A morning visit to Kejetia market, which is the largest outdoor market in the whole of Western Africa.  A labyrinth of stalls nestled closely together we experience everyday life for the people of this great city; during our time here we can pick up some bargain souvenirs at low prices.  Found a short distance from Kejetia is the village of Bonwire, home of Kente.  We will interact with the locals learning the history behind the many designs of cloth and witness skilled weavers outside their homes during our village tour.  A Coco farm is found a short distance away, Ghana is the worlds 2nd largest producer of Coco and a tour learning the process of producing quality Coco will give us an insight into the daily lives of many locals in Ghana.  After lunch we visit the village of Ntunsu the home of traditional Adinkra cloth.  The Adinkra cloth is adorned by beautiful symbols, each with its own meaning; during our time here we can produce our own strip of cloth with symbols of personal significance.

 

Day 8: Community based ecotourism project and wildlife:

After a leisurely breakfast we set off Northwards towards the villages of Boebeng and Fiema, these 2 villages have been protecting black and white colobus and mona monkeys that live in the surrounding forests.  The locals perceive them to be sacred; we will tour the village interacting with the locals, learning their history and traditions.

 

Day 9: Community based ecotourism project and wildlife:

Transfer to Wechiau.  An afternoon river safari and Lobi tribal village tour.

 

Day 10: Community based ecotourism project and wildlife:

We enjoy another early morning river safari seeing these magnificent mammals in their natural environment.  The afternoon will be spent with the locals from the community around our Lobi compound.  In the evening we will relax under the beautiful African night sky listening to traditional Lobi xylophone music.

 

Day 11: Wildlife viewing:

After a morning river safari we head off for Mole National Park, Ghana’s largest and best game viewing park.  We set off for an afternoon foot safari getting extremely close to the worlds largest land mammals African Elephants.  We marvel at the wildlife as we relax around the pool of our hotel in the evening.

 

Day 12: Wildlife viewing and cultural excursions:

After an early morning foot safari we enjoy our breakfast and relax around the hotel pool that overlooks the 2 watering holes.  In the afternoon we visit Larabanga and the 14th century mud and stick mosque.  We return in the early evening and enjoy the atmosphere of being so close to nature.

 

Day 13: Transfer to Bolgatanga:

We set off early, our destination is Bolgatanga capital of the Upper East region of Ghana, and en route we will stop in Tamale for lunch.  We arrive in Bolgatanga in the late afternoon and relax at our hotel.

 

Day 14: Community based ecotourism project and wildlife:

After a good breakfast we set off for Paga, here we visit the sacred crocodile ponds viewing these magnificent creatures and learning the history behind them.  We spend time in the town interacting with locals before visiting a nearby enslaved African camp. Here enslaved Africans were held captive before being transported south to the coast.  After lunch we head to the wonderful village of Sirigu.  We spend the afternoon with the locals visiting the markets and chiefs palace, a major highlight for most of our previous guests.

 

Day 15:

After breakfast we depart Bolgatanga, our destination is Kumasi, en route we will be taking a refreshing break at the beautiful Kintampo waterfall.  Some of our guests use this opportunity to experience the most refreshing shower in Ghana.  On our arrival in Kumasi we relax around the pool of our hotel.

 

Day 16: Cultural excursions:

We leave for Accra after breakfast, en route we will visit the beautiful Boti waterfall for a refreshing break.  After the falls we visit a small village that makes traditional Ghanaian glass beads.  We will sit with Comfort and here wonderful family learning the history behind the beads and the skilled process of making them.  We continue our journey to Accra stopping at Aburi craft village, an excellent place to buy wooden carvings and see the skilled locals carving outside their workshops.  A short distance from the village is Aburi Botanical Gardens a beautiful place to stop for lunch.  We arrive in Accra early evening and relax at our hotel.

 

Day 17: Cultural excursions:

Your final day with us in Ghana, after a leisurely breakfast you can relax around the pool of your hotel or visit the National Museum, a wonderful place where almost all the displays are ethnographic in nature.  We enjoy an early evening meal before your departure after a wonderful 17 day tour.
