11 Day Rainforest Tour

Tour Leaders: - David Daramani, Jens Ole Byskov, Kalu Afasi and Mark Williams

Summary:-

With over 750 different species of birds, Ghana is an ideal birdwatching destination.  Ashanti African Tours use highly experienced tour leaders and guides with expert knowledge of Ghana’s birds and their habitats.  Our tour leaders have been working in and around Ghana’s national parks for over 30 years studying and recording Ghana’s birds.  This local knowledge enhances our guest’s chances of a productive and enjoyable birdwatching holiday.  Ghana covers a variety of habitats from coastal wetland lagoons and saltpans on the Gold Coast, moving inland we find primary Guinea tropical rainforest where the world famous Kakum canopy walkway is found.  We have exclusive patronage of the walkway for a number of mornings during our tour.  The highlight of our tour is undoubtedly the visit to a yellow headed picathartes nesting site, getting a glimpse of this remarkable bird is an amazing feeling never forgotten.  As we are dedicating the majority of our time to rainforest birding we are enhancing our chances of finding the more sought after secretive species, which all leads to an extremely impressive quality bird tally, a tally we know will not disappoint!

Experience the Yellow Headed Picathartes with Ashanti African Birdwatching Tours

The Yellow Headed Picathartes was long believed to be extinct within Ghana, until it’s rediscovery in March 2003.  A chance discovery of only 2 nests was found in a remote area in the Brong-Ahafo region of the country.  For many years the main threat to this remarkable bird’s existence has been bush meat hunting by the locals.  Understandably the locals have no idea of its global importance; their only concern is daily survival.

Ashanti African Tours are a British company based in Ghana, offering professionally lead, all inclusive, small group birdwatching tours, using expert local and western guides.  We are currently supporting the protection of a remote site of 30 Yellow Headed Picathartes nests within Ghana.  During our 2 most recent tours in late February and March 2007 we had excellent views of 10 individuals, an amazing experience and undoubted highlight of all the participants many years of world wide birding.

The local community is extremely poor and it is imperative they see the immediate benefits of protecting and not hunting the site.  In response to this we pay a fee for every individual visiting the site which goes into a community fund and is used for community development projects.  This we hope will ensure the continued protection of the site for many years to come and help increase the picathartes population in the area.

We offer a wide selection of professionally lead birdwatching tours within Ghana, these can be personalised for small groups and commence anytime, all year round.
